Nashville SC Expansion Draft Haul Includes Danladi, Lovitz and Medranda
Nashville SC Expansion Draft Party was quite the night. Dax McCarty, Nashville SC’s likely captain, was introduced. Picks were made by John Ingram, Derrick Henry, Mookie Betts, Nate from Judah and the Lion and fan Gabby Acosta. It was super fast. Each pick was made and then Mike Jacobs immediately would talk about the pick. Two of these he immediately said would be traded. Once Nashville’s five picks were done, the trades came. I’m not even getting into it. Let’s just look at the six players Nashville ended the night with and how the roster looks now. Oh, this Facebook Photo Album has over a dozen pictures from the Nashville SC Draft Party at Ole Red.
A 25 year old Colombian was taken from Sporting Kansas City. The do it all midfielder was a regular starter for KC until a serious knee injury caused him to miss just over a year. He finally returned to playing in last May. If there is one club Mike Jacobs knows it is Sporting Kansas City. I’ve read he is versatile enough to possibly play defender. He should be counted on for regular minutes if all goes to plan. He made $155,000 last season.
A 31 year old veteran central defender was selected from New England Revolution. Anibaba has played for five MLS clubs. He will slot in right next to David Romney. He made just $101,000 last season so this was a value pick as well. There will surely be another central defender added to the roster.
Nashville picked up this 28 year old wingback in a trade from Montreal Impact. About the time this trade happened, Lovitz was starting for the USMNT versus Cuba. Ives Galarcep called it a bargain for Nashville. Lovitz should be the starting left back opening day versus Atlanta United. He made just $97,000 last season.
Willis is a 31 year old keeper that was taken from Houston Dynamo. He appeared in 90 games over the past five seasons. A bit surprising Nashville didn’t go for LAFC keeper Tyler Miller. Perhaps they would have, but when Lee Nguyen was taken by Miami in the 3rd round he came off the board. Hoe Willis will likely be in goal versus Atlanta. Willis made $165,000 last season.
Backup keeper for Sporting Kansas City. Essentially, he was traded for in part of the Medranda deal. Zendejas made the league minimum $70,000 last season.
The number 1 overall pick by Minnesota United in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft from UCLA, Danladi was picked ahead of names like Miles Robinson, Jackson Yueill and Julian Gressel among others. His first season he scored 8 goals and added three assists. He started 15 games for the Loons that year playing 1,391 minutes. Instead of improving from there, injury has set him back. When I say injury I mean a lot of them. In 2018 he had five — his left hamstring three times, right hamstring and right ankle once each. He only started 9 total games the past two years. Still just 24, the Ghanaian clearly has upside and he made just $145,000 last season. Seems a decent risk to take.
So above is how Nashville SC would lineup if the played Atlanta United tomorrow. Team still needs a right back and depth. The number 9 spot is also questionable. Danladi is a risk with high upside. There isn’t a proven MLS player at that spot. I suspect Jacobs will address this before the season starts.
