Jeff Carlisle has confirmed that Nashville SC has signed Randall Leal. Leal is a 22 year old attacking mid who plays with Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica. He can play on either left or right, but has primarily been used on the left. Flexibility is always a plus. He has made 38 league and cup appearances scoring six goal for Saprissa. Leal has 11 caps for Costa Rica, including three at the Gold Cup earlier this summer where he played over 200 minutes. Like most, I know nothing about Leal. However, Saprissa is the super club of Costa Rica as many an MLS team has learned. The most interesting part of the signing in Carlisle’s report, ” Leal’s salary will be above the threshold for a Young Designated Player, but it is unclear if Targeted Allocation Money will be used to buy down his hit to the salary budget.” Young DP’s between 21 and 23 count $200,000 against the cap. That means Leal will be making more than that. A significant investment in a young player. For comparison, Leal will be making more than current MLS players Lancaster, Rios and Jones combined. Mike Jacobs clearly sees him having a bright future in the Music City.
