Nashville SC 2-0 Charlotte Independence

Nashville SC played its best match of the season beating first place Charlotte Independence 2-0 last night at a cold First Tennessee Park. For a third straight match, Nashville SC kept a clean sheet thanks in large part to Matt Pickens. His save in the 57′ minute exemplifies what he has been doing all season. You can see the one handed gym at 1:23 of the match replay video below. Of course you can’t go 337 minutes without allowing a goal without the back line playing really well. From day one manager Gary Smith has focused on organization and defense. It is paying off.

Of course we know Nashville SC has great defense. What was so encouraging about the match last night was the offense. It’s not just that two goals were scored. Nashville had much more possession in the attacking third than previous games. Alan Winn scored his second goal of the season and Nashville’s first from open play with a nice bit of skill and calm finish the bottom left corner. Sub Ropapa Mensah added a second in stoppage time off and goal kick from Pickens. He used that strong body to turn and shield the defender allowing him to chip the rushing keeper for the dagger.

Attendance at the match last night was announced by USL at just under 7500. Not too bad given mid 30 degree temperatures in April. Nashville won’t play another home match for over a month. Next game is Saturday, April 14 at Indy Eleven.
